CASA Latina – Next door no more?

CASA Latina (Centro de Ayuda Solidaria a los Amigos) will move out of Belltown, perhaps by the end of year. On Feb. 12 the City Council awarded the group $250,000 toward the purchase of a building at 17th Avenue South and South Jackson Street.

The nonprofit group has provided educational and employment services to area immigrant communities since 1994. It currently operates an office at 2201 Blanchard Street and a day-laborer center at Battery and Western. It also operates a Burien apartment complex and a Central Area women’s-leadership workshop. In 2005, opposition from south-end neighborhood groups helped scuttle CASA’s plans to move into the former Chubby & Tubby variety store on Rainier Avenue South.

CASA currently plans to renovate and expand an existing building at the Jackson Street site. To pay for the project, the group hopes to raise $1.25 million in public funds and $2.25 million from private donations over the next two to three years.
